Trinity

Trojans III 11 - 8 WOKING

Woking's final match of the seaon came against Trojans III at Trinity School. Trojans fielded a much strengthened team than the one that played at Abbeylands at the beginning of the season. Woking started well and managed to knock up a quick fire three goal lead. However a lack of fluidity in attack soon saw Trojans stamp their authority upon the game and the easily pulled the deficit back and went in to half time leading Woking 5-4. The second half began with Robin replacing Simon as we utilised our squad. Trojans continued to play well and we struggled to break them down in attack. Unfortunately we were dealt two inlucky blows - first Adam picked up an injury to his knee that forced him to come off five miuntes in to the half. With no other players on the bench, Woking were forced to play one section as a three. Gill, Rachael and Robin took their time to settle but just as they began to threaten and with a one goal deficit, Robin badly turned his ankle and saw out the remaining 10 minutes using all but one foot! The match ended 11-8 to Trojans. Our attacks were limited with us wasting much possession and rushing our play. This was a disappointing end to what has been a good season. Woking finished second in the London Premier League behind an unbeaten Highbury. When you add in to the mix the number of new young players that have been added to the squad this year the future looks very bright indeed. The final words of the season go to Terry who has yet again perfomed miracles with us this season. Thank you very much for your hard work this year!

Supernova II 6 - 10 WOKING

Woking travelled to Battersea the day after the Milton Keynes Tournament where many of our team had played. Fearing a few tired legs, Terry's inital plans of resting Rachael and Adam were thrown in to jeopardy by the late withdrawal of Clemens and the late arrival of Joy. A physical Supernova began strongly but could not get on to the scoreboard as Woking defended excellently. Rachael soon showed her worth by scoring the opening goal, swiftly followed by a running in shot from Simon. Supernova found the going easier in the other section and soon equalised by pulling two goals back. Gill put Woking back in front only for Supernova to equalise and then take the lead. With half time approaching, Eliza pulled Woking level but Supernova converted yet another shot to go in 5-4 up at the break. Woking were playing well and needed to stop rushing and to play the ball around more. The second half got underway with Rachael scoring her second of the game. Adam and then Joy took Woking in to a 2 goal lead. Supernova were getting increasingly frustrated as their players began what can only be described as rugby-esque tackles on David and Simon. Having smiled our way through their antics, Rachael completed her hatrick by sinking a running-in shot. The victory was sewn up when Simon and then Doug (penalty) completed the scoring. A last couple of frantic minutes saw Supernova pull a goal back, but the victory was never in doubt following this commanding second half performance. Yet again we shot ourselves in the foot by attempting silly passes and giving away posession soon after getting the ball in attack. However, this shouldn't take anything away from what was an excellent result by Woking!

Sat 23rd February 2008, Milton Keynes Tournament

Luton

Woking took an inexperienced squad to Luton for the first indoor tournament of 2008. We were entered in to the beginner's pool to give our newest members all important match experience. Having been blooded in friendly matches earlier in the season, John, Becky, Abbey, Lara and Helen were given the opportunity to show us what they're made of. It soon became apparent they they were all in for a steep learning curve as our first opponents, Bec, showed little sign of fielding a beginner's team. However, they all performed well and as soon as the initial nerves had passed Woking began to settle and string a few good moves togther. Bec's experience showed as they ran out 4-1 winners, but a beautifully executed shot from Becky soon put a smile on all of our faces.

It was a refief that there was a 40 minute wait between each match as we only had four boys who would be called upon to play. Rachael, Vicki and Eliza were drafted in for the match against MK Roos where Woking ran out 3-2 winners with goals coming from Adam, Robin and Eliza. Next up were Oxfordshire, who fielded a combination of players from various clubs in the region. All in all a frustrating game where tempers were stretched and we lost much of our togetherness. A mixture of poor refereeing and poor pitch contributed to a very messy Woking performance. However, Woking managed to hold on for a 1-1 draw and of particular note were the performances of Helen and Lara who began to grow in confidence.

After Terry installed some self-belief back in to us by playing sleeping lions in the bar(!!!) we all returned for a grudge match against Highbury. Woking recorded a well deserved 2-1 victory, both goals coming through Adam. Our last two matches were against Cambridge Phoenix. With both team's final group places more-or-less guaranteed, it was inevitable that we would face each other again. An excellent team performance saw Woking record a 2-1 victory having been a goal behind from the early stages. A well worked move saw Lara score her first goal for the club, and then Eliza scored the winner with a finely executed long shot. The second and final match of the day saw Woking triumph once again, this time the score was 3-2. Goals by Lara, Adam and Becky ensured Woking left Luton with smiles on their faces.

We should all be very proud of our efforts. There were some fantastic individual performances and a huge amount of effort by everyone to last all 6 matches. To finish 3rd in the beginner's pool is a credit to everyone, especially as many of the teams we faced fielded players who had much more experience. Roll on the summer when we can look to improve and go even further in the outdoor tournaments!

St Mary's College

Bec III 12 - 7 WOKING

Woking travelled to Twickenham for an early start against a strong looking Bec III. Adam got Woking off to a great start by sinking a fantastic long shot from near the half way line. However, Bec III soon got into their rhythm and Woking were soon 3-1 down. Simon converted a penalty but Bec III replied with two quickfire goals. Robin and Gill restored some belief only for Bec III to maintain their two goal advantage with a goal just before half time. Going in to the second half 4-6 down, Terry had conveyed the importance of keeping it simple and to stop rushing every move. Unfortunately Woking continued to make silly mistakes and Bec III punished us through their up tempo gameplay. Joy managed to keep the game within reach at 5-7, however Bec III pulled away to score 3 goals without reply. Robin scored his second goal of the season but only for Bec III to continue their dominance, and with Joy scoring near the end the final score was Bec III 12 - 7 Woking. Overall, there was a huge amount of effort by everyone but as a team we just did not perform. We need to think about our passing and movement and we must stop attempting impossible passes.

WOKING 7 - 4 Nomads III

Woking had lost their opening league fixture of the season to Nomads III, so revenge was on the cards right from the start. However, Nomads had obviously not read the script and took an early lead. Goals through Simon, Joy and Claire soon provided Woking with a bit of breathing space and with half time approaching Gill soon increased the lead further only for Nomads to pull one back just before the break. Half time score: Woking 4 - 2 Nomads III. Eliza and Heather came on for Claire and Rachael in the second half and with Nomads III scoring an early goal, it was left to Joy to maintain Woking's 2 goal advantage. Heather scored in her first move of the game and with Joy completing her hatrick after another Nomads strike the final whistle blew with woking coming out 7-4 victors. Well done to everyone in what was a hard fought victory. The boys were finding it particularly tough so it was thanks to the girls for putting the points on the board! We should learn to capitalise on our opponents weaknesses and as Terry says,"We can win with out him shouting at us from the side". This was also Claire's last game of the season, so thank you for your brilliant captaincy, you will be sorely missed. Good luck with the pregnancy and we look forward to having you back next season!

WOKING 14 - 7 Supernova II

Woking got off to a flying start in what looked like being a tough game. The line was worked excellently from the start and Woking were unlucky not have scored in the opening minute. However Gill scored a quickfire brace and with some excellent defending Woking managed to compile a commanding lead with goals through Claire, David (3) and Eliza. Simon added a further goal and it was only a drop in concentration that allowed Supernova a sniff at reducing the 5 goal deficit at half time. Woking began the second half poorly as our concentration levels remained low. Supernova began chipping away at our lead and if it hadn't been for Gill's crucial third goal the game could have taken a critical turn. At 9-6 Woking suddenly woke up and many of the eye of the needle passes were stopped and we began to play like we know we can. Goals by Claire, Simon and a fourth for Gill soon took the game out of Supernova's reach. Eliza and Doug added to Woking's total with the game ending in a 14-7 victory for the home side. Well done to all those who played. A clinical performance and with more concentration the score should have been a lot higher.

West London I 3 - 8 WOKING

A much improved team performance saw us to an 8-3 victory at West London to complete a league double over them. Two quick goals from Joy got Woking off to a great start, before further strikes from David, Adam, Vicki and another from Joy saw Woking in a strong position at half time. It was a more disciplined and controlled performance and we had to be on our guard against some rather strange West London moves. The second half was tougher as West London woke up. However some excellent defending restricted West London two only two goals and with David and Eliza finishing the game off in style, Woking eased to an 8-3 victory. Not perfect but our best performance in a few weeks.

WOKING 11 - 6 Croydon III

Woking faced Croydon III at home having only drawn away in our previous meeting. Our coach Terry was too busy making an honest woman of Gill so many congratulations to you both. So without our coach we had to remain focused and with the first few exchanges proving very tense no-one seemed able to break the deadlock, but eventually Croydon opened the scoring however David sank a long shot to bring us all square. Unfortunately a series of long shots by us were just not going in and we seemed unable to break out of this habit. As a result Croydon scored 4 goals without reply. Eliza pulled one back to make it 2-5 at half time. During the break we spoke about maintaining our discipline and not just taking the long shots and focussing on the 'Y' formation. A combination of hard work, better movement and some luck in shooting led us to an amazing comeback in the second half. Two more goals from Eliza (with support in the 'Y' by Claire, Doug and Adam) and three more goals from David with Adam (2), Simon and Doug also chipping in saw Woking end up unlikely 11-6 victors. Vicki and Rachael provided fantastic support to Simon and David throughout the match, but one thing to note was that all the goals were scored form long shots. We must remember that there is a much better chance of a running in shot going in and we must work harder at creating these opportunities. Thanks must also go to Ben for sitting on the bench. Not feeling 100% meant he didn't come on but he was ready to spring in to action if required!

WOKING 6 - 3 Trojans III

Having kicked start their season with a valuable victory last time out, Woking picked up another home win. Trojans arrived with only six players so Woking had to adjust their game to accommodate the player advantage. We went in to an early lead and never looked troubled throughout a one-sided first half. Goals were spread throughout the Woking team with Claire opening the scoring early on. Doug, David and Joy followed suit and with Trojans scoring a goal shortly before half time, Woking were 4-1 up at the break. However, all was not as good at as it seemed with Woking finding it increasingly difficult to play their normal game and struggling to bring the extra player in to the feed. Terry brought Adam and Eliza on to shake things up a bit in the second half, however Trojans began as they finished the first half by reducing the deficit to 4-2. Vicki and Adam both scored to relieve the self imposed pressure on the team and eventually Woking held out for a 6-3 victory. By no means our greatest performance and Woking really need to focus on using width in order to create more opportunites.

Abbeylands

WOKING 7 - 2 West London I

With the Woking team again reshuffled it was going to be interesting to see if the sections could gel and achieve a much needed win. Any initial concerns were wiped away as Woking got in to a quick lead with a goal from Claire and a penalty from Doug. Woking continued to work hard and two goals from Simon saw us take a 4-0 lead before a West London penalty took us in to half time 4-1 up. Playing with different players in sections had led to a few mis-placed passes and problems with reading each others movement, but in the second half the players started to develop a better understanding and played well. While West London did pull one goal back, the second half saw Woking control the game through a large part of possession. Goals from Rachael and another from Simon made our lead comfortable, and the scoring was completed with a great goal from the half way line by Eliza. The match finished 7-2, but it really could have been more. Some work on finishing is definitely required. It is good to see the goals being spread around the whole team. We need to work on using the whole pitch and get greater width into the game to make space for running and veering shots.

WOKING 3 - 4 Basingstoke

The West London match was followed by a friendly with Basingstoke which gave many of our new players their first indoor match experience in Korfball. Basingstoke put out a mixed team of experienced and new players (with a few Woking members to make up the numbers). Goals for Woking came from Heather and Ben (2). You can all be happy with your performances as you showed you are learning fast. There was good concentration in defence and some good movement in attack. With more experience playing and shooting I'm sure a few more goals will come.

Croydon III 5 - 5 WOKING

With a depleted squad, Woking headed to Croydon III in search of their first victory of the season. Woking started well with David scoring his first goal for the club on his debut. Croydon III responded quickly with an equaliser. Both teams attacked and defended well and the score line remained untouched for several minutes. However, Croydon III eventually broke Woking's solid defence and scored. Woking rallied and Doug scored taking the game in all square at half time, 2-2. Terry encouraged us to attempt more veering and running in shots rather than relying on the long shots which just weren't going in today. The second half began with Croydon III scoring quickly but Woking hit back with three goals through Adam, David and Doug. We continued to defend well but Croydon found that extra gear and proceeded to edge their way back in to the game. With several minutes left on the clock the score was 5-5 and both teams were searching in vain for the winning goal. That goal never materialised and a draw was the final result. Overall a hard fought game which showed some periods of good play, especially in defence. A special mention to David for scoring two goals on his debut for the club. Well done!

WOKING 9 - 9 Bec III

Woking opened their Home fixtures against Bec III. With the sports hall resembling more of an Ice Rink than a Korfball pitch, players from both sides found the hall conditions hard work. A close game throughout started with Bec taking an early 3-1 lead, with Gill scoring our opener before 3 quick goals from Adam (2) and Eliza took us in to the lead for the 1st time. A late score from Bec bought the 1st half to an end at 4-4 Goals continued to flow from both ends in the 2nd period, with Adam, Eliza (2), Clemens and Simon all hitting the net and with 5 minutes left we had a 9-7 lead. Bec, however, never let up and were always dangerous and after bringing it back to 9-8 levelled with 2 minutes to go. Ultimately a disappointing 9-9 draw after leading for so long. However, with some decent play in both halves and an opening point under our belts, we need to be positive and use this as a platform to improve for the rest of the season. We also saw the introduction of Ben and Becky for the final few minutes of the match to give them an introduction to the League. Well done both of you. Fast isn’t it!!!

Nomads III 12 - 9 WOKING

Woking travelled to Epsom College for our first game of the 2007/08 season, where we came up against a very experienced Nomads side. The game got off to a flying start with Rachael scoring our first points of the season with a finely executed long shot. However, Nomads soon equalised and went on to score four more points without reply. We did not let our heads drop and soon our hard work paid off when Simon reduced the deficit to 2-5. Eliza then ran in her first goal of the season and Claire added a quick-fire brace to take us in level at half time. The second half began as the first half ended with Simon taking us in to a 5-6 lead. However, Nomads were up for the challenge and replied with two more goals. Vicki brought us level again only for Nomads to step up a gear scoring 5 more goals in quick succession. Simon and Claire added a further two points to our total near the end but it was not enough to save the match. Overall we played well in short periods and with a bit more luck and clinical finishing we could quite easily have won this tough opening fixture.
